SOC101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Binary Opposition, Nanny, Visible Minority
Document Summary
Sex = what you are when you are born (biological characteristics) Gender = what is assigned to you by society (roles and characteristics: inequality is present here. Gender roles are not only present in our own behaviour, but they are present in how we interact (social interaction) to each other as well. We have the tendency to think in terms of opposites (ex. tall + short, fast/slow, black or white) > tendency to break the social world into a binary concept > dichotomization of sexes into male and female. We don"t even recognize how bluntly we have split the population or life sometimes. Ex. how lasenza girl was created as a branch of lasenza (an extremely feminine brand) for children, allowing them to grow up under he impression that that is how they had to dress. Males are socialized as masculine - tough, courageous, daring, dominant. Females are socialized to be feminine - sweet, soft, pretty, submissive, emotional.
