SOC101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Stereotype, Hidden Curriculum, Deeper Understanding
Document Summary
Socialization: life long process of growth and development. Nurtured by social agents ie. family (or lack thereof ), peers, education, media. Human interaction is essential in the development of intellectual and basic motor skills. Reality is constructed by our experience through interactions with other people. The "i" part of the self creative, spontaneous, and impulsive. Being conscious of how other people view you. How you think you are being perceived by other people. Significant others: people we want approval from ie. parents. Generalized others: a combination of other attributes are taken into consideration. People of the broader world that influence the "me" Role-taking: assuming the position of another person in order to better understand them in their situation. Double-consciousness: a sense of self that is defined through the eyes of others. Allows for deeper understanding of the social world. Struggle to see themselves independently as a black majority. Adapt a second conscious that counteracts the oppression.
