Max weber: social class - income, wealth, economic position, upper / middle / lower, status - prestige attached to ones position, power. Reasons: technological advances - no one is trained to handle such highly skilled equipment, family change - physicians marrying other physicians, social power - lawyers, executives, political change - raising minimum wage. The greatest disparities in society are found in the enormous differences in wealth. Wealth brings a wide range of advantages: can be invested (bonds, real estate, material comforts (tax lawyers, personal trainer, financial security (retirement) ^ poverty persists bc of there three basic reasons. There are two broad types of poverty: absolute poverty - measure of what people need in order to survive - deprivation, relative poverty - focuses on inequality.
