A behaviour that violates societal standards of conduct or expectations. Deviant because someone has the power to label them as deviant. Not everyone agrees on what deviance is. Lead to targeting a person or group. Applied to a group of people and are therefore targeted. Techniques and strategies for preventing deviant human behaviour in any society. Each society determines which sanctions are going to be subjective to formal social control. Some see plastic surgery as deviant behaviour. Our culture provides us with desired goals and legitimate means to achieve them. What happens when we cant achieve the american cream? we experience strain. Situations where individuals don"t have legitimate means to achieve these goals. Innovation - want societal goals but use illegitimate means to achieve them. Members of the lower class experience status frustration when they are unable to succeed in a middle class institutions and then become socialized into a deviant subculture.
