Nazis were not interested in individuals assimilating culturally, or converting religiously, if you had jewish genes, you were considered a threat to society. Because of his jewish background, his family was persecuted during wwii. He escaped to canada where he lived in an internment camp. Cannot celebrate presence of god if we do not recognize absence. Reaction to evil to be a solidarity with victims of evil. Module 8 traditional christian rejection of the world (absence of god) Dualism: world vs heave or word vs church. World is dominated by devil a place of suffering with illness, death, evil. With vatican ii, the catholic church dropped medieval notion of the world as evil and corrupt. New image of god as being present in human history whenever someone is enlightened and empowered.
