Module 5 Environmental Impacts of Tourism
Description and Learning Outcomes
In module 5, you will be introduced to the environment as a resource in tourism. After
successfully completing this module, you should be able to do the following.
• Explain the importance of the environment as a tourism resource
• Discuss the positive and negative impacts of tourism on the environment
• Explain the ways in which adverse impacts can be mitigated

1. Introduction
• Tourism should be planned in an integrated manner aimed at the sustainable development
of its cultural and natural resources
• Therefore, the environmental approach should be applied throughout the planning
process
2. Environmental Impacts
• It is essential to understand and continuously assess the environmental impacts of tourism
and to consider how the negative impacts can be prevented and positive ones reinforced
• Up until recently, little attention was paid to the environmental impacts of tourism
3. Environmental Impacts
• For our purposes, environment refers to the physical environment: this includes natural
and constructed components
• There has been a new focus on prevention and control of environmental impacts while
maintaining economic objectives
4. Relationship between Tourism and the Environment
• The three aspects of the tourism-environment are:
o Many features of the physical and natural environment are attractions for tourists
o Tourists facilities and infrastructure constitute one aspect of the built environment
o Tourism development and tourist use of an area generate environmental impacts
