Module 7 PA- Leisure Constraints
Constraint: a leisure constraint is any factor that stands between a possible activity and
one's opportunity for involvement in that experience.
three categories of constraints are encountered and negotiated in a sequential,
hierarchical fashion
1. Interpersonal constraints arise out of social interactions and relationships with
people (e.g., friends, family, and others).
2. Structural constraints are factors that intervene between leisure preference and
participation (e.g., financial resources, availability of time, and opportunity)
Criterion Variables
Criterion variables are used by researchers to determine who participates and who does
not, based on the impact of constraints.
1. Inability to maintain participation at or increase it to desired levels.
2. Ceasing participation in former activities.
3. Insufficient enjoyment of current activities
Constraint Negotiation
five-category typology of people
o Achievers
-are people who, despite constraints, do not reduce or change
participation at all.
- more participation rather than less
o Attempters
-are people who, despite constraints, continue to participate.
o Compromisers
-negotiate their leisure so that they can accomplish two things at once.
- participate in an altered manner
o Dabblers
-are those who respond passively to constraints with minor attempts to
overcome them, or who willingly replace one activity with another.
- let their individual values rather than the needs of others influence
their activities.

Document Summary

Constraint negotiation five-category typology of people: achievers. Are people who, despite constraints, do not reduce or change participation at all. More participation rather than less: attempters. Are people who, despite constraints, continue to participate: compromisers. Negotiate their leisure so that they can accomplish two things at once. Participate in an altered manner: dabblers. Are those who respond passively to constraints with minor attempts to overcome them, or who willingly replace one activity with another. Let their individual values rather than the needs of others influence their activities: quitters/defaulters. Are people who cease participation or never attempt an activity even though they are interested in it. Not see the benefits of activities as more important than the costs or constraints they would have to overcome. Benefit of constraints: resilience and deepened commitment, attention to other goals, discovery of previously unattended capacities, changes in attitude toward life and leisure, goal achievement and well-being.
