The research on life satisfaction is concerned with how and why people experience their life in positive ways. Mihaly csikszentmihalyi: flow, the secret to happiness: lack of basic and material resources contribute to unhappiness, ecstasy in greek meant to stand to the side of something; analogy for a mental state. What are a few other approaches to this: substitutability describes the concept that certain activities may be swapped for other activities while meeting the same psychological needs and providing the same experience. 2: optimal level of arousal; appropriate level of stimulation, leisure styles explain why people do what they do in their leisure in order to be satisfied, stereotypes model: stereotypes attach label according to observable factor. Not all stereotypes accurately reflect reality - this model can be problematic: core model: core leisure activities are easily assessable, common (usually home- based), and low in cost, balance model: seek leisure activities encouraging variety and change.
