Document Summary
[x]identify some of the forces that shape leisure travel. What is tourism? tourism is not an industry. Tourism is a form of human behaviour that is supported in part by a variety of industries. Tourism: a social, cultural and economic phenomenon which entails the movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional purposes. People engage in tourism for business (meetings, conferences, etc), pleasure (vacation, shopping, visiting family, etc), and other reasons (medical or religious purposes) Travelers are motivated by push and pull factors. Push factor: the needs that arise due to a state of disequilibrium or tension in some level of one"s motivational system - as mentioned in maslow"s hierarchy of needs. Pull factor: the factors influencing when, where, and how people travel and are related to the features, attractions, or attributes of the destination itself. Environmental impacts: one significant challenges is that tourism is a high consumption activity.
