Condition #1: word flash on the screen, if flashed long enough, you can see the word. #2: flash word very briefly (precede the word by some sort of pattern) pattern before a word forward mask. More v1 activation when you are aware than unaware (recruit more neurons in v1) More stimulus specific activation in the brain (ex. Look at faces fusiform gyrus activates) when you are aware of the stimulus. Presented with 2 separate images, one on each eye. Typically aware of one of the images at a time (that one becomes aware but then disappears and then the other image becomes aware) Conscious area (more activity in the specific area that you are aware of) Consciousness seems to be associated with these different areas of the brain, they all become active, and they start to synchronize their firing in multiple areas of the brain. You are functionally blind to the experiment ( you are not attending to the stimulus)
