Provide mechanism of understanding the practical physical connection between brain structure/function and behavior. Making a hole in the brain via aspiration, cauterization, causing structural damage to some small area of the brain. Aims to make an association between the function of an area by observing the effects of damage to it. Complex behaviors are created by multiple areas of the brain. Damage to one area may damage fibres that pass through the location rather than the location itself --> incorrect assumptions. Electrolytic lesion may stimulate other areas of the brain and cause distant release of a neurotransmitter that cause the effects. Excitotoxic lesion: a brain lesion produced by intracerebral injection of an excitory amino acid. Kainic acid - acts on cell bodies and only kills cells at the location of the injection (doesn"t damage fibres that pass through the region) 6-hydroxydopamine: selectively taken up and kills axons and terminal buttons of adrenergic or dopaminergic neurons.
