We are sensitive to our social environment: people act in different ways to conform to standards because we want to be able to actively participate in our social environment; go along with societal rules and regulations. May go against our own better judgement: conformity to social norms; proximal and distal explanations. Non-conformity; when and why? (griskevicius et al. , 2006: moral licensing (bandura et al, 1996) Upholding social norms, maintain collective behaviour: degrees of conformity, not all behaviour compliance is equally weighted (some instances of non-conformity are acceptable, sometimes even desired!) We use civil law to uphold fundamental norms and distribute heavy punishment for non-conformers: other societies exist where their norms are different; Naturalistic fallacy, what is normal (for us) is good and what is good is what. Proximal explanation; the direct effects of a behaviour, provides a super cial analysis of the purpose (ie the how )
