Attention is mentally focusing on some stimulus. Perception is interpreting sensory information to yield meaningful information. Pattern recognition is classifying a stimulus into a known category. Memory is the storage facilities and retrieval processes of cognition. Knowledge representation is your mental organization of the knowledge you have accumulated in your lifetime. Plato compared the mind to an aviary in which many birds are flying, and memory retrieval to trying to catch a specific bird: sometimes you can, but at other times you can grab only a nearby bird. Empiricism (locke, hume, berkeley, mill, and aristotle)rest on the tenet that knowledge comes from an individuals"s own experience that is, from the empirical information that people collect from their sense and experiences. Empiricists recognize individual differences in genetics but emphasize human nature"s malleable, or changeable, aspects. Empircists believe people are the way they are, and have the capabilities they have, largely because of previous learning.
