Broca identified area on left side of brain that was damaged and claimed to have found where speech production was localized (area now called broca"s area ) Karl wernicke identified wernicke"s area patients w damage to area could speak in sentences that sounded normal, but w unusual or made-up words; recovered patients reported that no speech made sense during recovery period language comprehension!
