Document Summary

Nervous system is organized into a hierarchy: central nervous system (cns, peripheral nervous system (pns) Forebrain (most recent; what defines human from other animals) Localization of function: different parts of brain responsible for different but overlapping tasks. Lateralization: right and left sides (hemispheres) of the brain are partly specialized. Pns brings info to and from the cns. Somatic nervous system: continuous through body (vs midsection for autonomic) Connects sensory receptors and skeletal muscles to the cns (red nerve pathways). Efferent nerve fibers: transmit information from cns to the periphery (brain -- muscles). Afferent nerve fibers: transmit information from the periphery to the cns (sensory receptors -- brain). Info can only travel i(cid:374) o(cid:374)e dire(cid:272)tio(cid:374); flo(cid:449)s (cid:862)do(cid:449)(cid:374)strea(cid:373)(cid:863) Digestion requires a lot of energy, so shut down in the sympathetic division allows it to be used elsewhere. Localization of function: different parts of the brain perform different but overlapping tasks.
