Revolution (social): entail not only mass mobilization and regime change, but iso more or less rapid and fundamental social, economic, and/or cultural change during or soon after the struggle for state power. It is possible, that social movements may become revolutionary and for revolutionary movements to become social movements or even political parties. Territories of the state tend to recede or separate from the state. In order to catch up revolutions occur movements and to social problems created by modernization. Why bring state in : successful revolutions involve the breakdown or incapacitation of the state, strong revolutionary movements emerge only in opposition to states that act in certain ways. Political opportunities: revolutions are likely to be successful only when political opportunities are expanding, revolutions tend to emerge when states are repressive and citizens feel pushed into the corner and must revolt to bring change.
