South america features some cities that originate with the spanish conquest and others that derive their identity from the portuguese. Southern cone (chile, argentina, uruguay, and paraguay): southern cone cities, with the exception of paraguay, are heavily european in ethnic composition as well as in urban planning traditions. Portuguese america (brazil): brazil"s cities have various urban forms entirely distinct from their hispanic counterparts. In socio-cultural terms, the important african admixture makes patterns of black-white stratification a key urban issue in many brazilian cities.
