European colonization took over the first nations: also brought sickness e. g. small pox that killed about 90% of the population. Colonizers/settlers thought that first nations were in their way of progress, and assumed they came to am empty land: natives were trespassers on their own land and became poverty, indian act . Independent tribal nations became dependant on the state and cant manage their land on their own. Natives were forced to live according to the settlers" kill the indian in the native child , cultural genocide: not even allowed to speak their language. Kids were forced to go to these schools: 40% died from abuse, disease, trying to run away, last one closed in 1996, the effects are still evident. They still fight for their lands and sovereignty. Water was going to be shut off, and they did. Band didn"t collapse like the village anticipated. Reconciliation: collaborations to move beyond history, bridging the gaps, cross-cultural organizations.
