This week"s lectures focus on the metropolitan region form and planning. Compare to others, a postindustrial city has a smaller city centre but very diverse suburban communities. Urban dispersion started since 1950s, a dispersed city has low population with land expansion, which results in the increasing usage of cars that all the trips are made by cars. Pittsburg and santiago have experienced urban dispersion, and some policies such as. Federal housing administration (fha) and veterans administration loan (va loan) also encouraged urban sprawl. There are five component of urban dispersion: housing subdivisions, shopping centres, office parks and business parks, civic institutions and roadways. The main features of urban dispersion are the poor-quality transit service and high dependence on cars, low-rise buildings, and economic decline of cbd. There are many factors that cause urban dispersal, such as the increasing amount of automobiles, the change in cultural and economic trends, the dominant transport land-use dynamic and consumer preference.
