PLAN261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Smart Growth, Public Land Survey System
Document Summary
The third lecture of plan 261 was primarily focussed on the built environment and the regulations surrounding the built environment. There have been regulations surrounding the built environment for quite a long time, even as far back as the law of the indies that described rules for the layout of colonial cites. These laws chose the grid pattern as the desired development layout. This grid pattern can be seen in many cities around the world such as antigua, guatemala and lima, peru. Several historical cities were based off variations of the grid as well, featuring plazas and central public squares. The land ordinance of 1785 was the basis for the public land survey. System and established the township and range system of land subdivision. This ordinance set precedents for land sale and selling mile-square sections of land. Five hinge events are critical to the evolution of modern day urban planning.
