PHIL224 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Deep Ecology, Environmentalism, Slippery Slope
Document Summary
Problem: he doesn"t know what to do when there is a trade-of between things. Taylor tries to make sense of this view and show you how it is raional and reasonable. Taylor"s views are not holist (doesn"t take the deep ecology line but some wholes count), individualisic or has to do with animal rights perspecives. Individual organisms such as humans, plants, insects, bacteria. Species and populaions where the good of the collecive is separate from the individual. Genuine bioic communiies where we can ariculate them. Things do not need to know it has a good of its own (eg. it is bad for a tree to have its roots be drive over. It may not be psychologically aware, but we can sill ariculate its interests) We know what"s good for the living thing because we know biology. Two key concepts: the good of a being: there is something that is good for a being even though they aren"t.
