Shaped based on culture individualist vs. collectivist (continuum) Individualist culture more concentrated on characteristics that reflect themselves. Collectivist culture more concentrated on how people are related to the community. Do i feel more individualistic or collectivist: dominant view vs. individual debates, see pyramid chart of previous lecture. External (tip of iceberg: explicitly learned, conscious, easily changed, objective knowledge. Internal (bottom of iceberg: implicitly learned, unconscious, difficult to change, subjective knowledge. Why do people from different cultures so often misunderstand each other: e. g. Different notions of time: dehumanization of the other , these values/ideas are so imbedded we hardly recognize them, so it"s difficult to come to terms with each other. Profound differences in common sense understandings of the world: meaning systems, value priorities, norms guiding relationships, understandings of the history that matters . People actually build different realities and occupy different realities jayne docherty. Willingness to work across worldview differences requires patience.
