PACS202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Functionalism Versus Intentionalism
Document Summary
Speaker encodes idea (how are you going to communicate the idea) Speaker expresses encoded idea (emphasis with body language/words) Listener decodes ( gure out what speaker is saying) Speaker encodes one way, listener decodes in another. Speakers words and actions do not communicate their idea. Emotion can cause issue (listener expecting to hear certain words) Workshops can teach ways to response to these issues. (when we engage in a discussion of signi cance there is a back and forth that shapes an idea - learning together) Action: a comment, motion or event that is public insofar as it can be heard or seen. Intent: the reason behind an action that is private to the actor. E ect: the impact of the action that is private to the receiver. Back story behind intent: the reason that exists behind intent. Often the backstory has relatively little to do with the immediate situation.
