A system that puts a set of signals into a set of meanings. Simplest for is one meaning for one signal, and one signal for one meaning. More noise other sensory signals, distorts a message. When this is unavoidable - restate what you are saying in different forms. Word choice re ects how one feels about a person (even if all the words are synonyms) Distinguishing between a messages literal meaning and its contextual meaning. The intention behind the words (humpty dumpty approach) When forming a message, think about how the listener might interpret it. Misunderstanding is more likely in con ict because of this and both parties expect messages to be hostile so even innocent ones can be interpreted to be antagonistic. Big problem - language barriers and misunderstood translations (and unknown cultural slang/ phrases) Need to know cultural context to interpret messages correctly. People see the world from different points of view.
