Document Summary

University of waterloo - fall 2014 - math 135. An internet myth (which could actually be true) says that a chinese general went to battle with. After the battle was over, he wanted to count how many soldiers were still alive. Easy , said his sub-commander, line all of them up and count them . Ain"t nobody got time for that , replied the commander in ancient mandarin. So he asked a bright lieutenant named gabriel to come up with a clever way of counting the number of soldiers. Here is what he proposed: order your soldiers to group themselves in groups of 5 and check the remaining number of soldiers that don"t nd a group. Repeat this with groups of 7, 8 and 9 soldiers. Then use the four remainders to compute the total number of soldiers. Before solving this problem, let"s see some simpler examples.
