Ls 327 - lecture 7 - patterns and theories of police deviance. Deviance: broad definition, violation of norms (informal and formal) Police deviance: focuses on the violation of formal rules and regulations, laws. Police controlled by variety of laws and regulations, in particular, they are regulated by the criminal code, quasi criminal statutes, civil laws, police services act, rcmp act. Some forms of deviance can be minor or serious. Minor ones: administrative in nature (ex; police expected to wear hat in dutyy), serious ones: robbery (face both criminal code and police act charges) Criminal code: deals with much serius regulations. Police act: charges are also serious can be deducted salary, drop in rank, be fired two main types of serious formal acts of deviance by the police: Overzealous law enforcement: describe actions that police take that have with the goal of mind the enforcement of the law.
