Ls 229 - lecture 16 - nature of drug trafficking and research methodology. Controlled drugs: those bought from pharmacies, tobacco, alcohol, etc. Controlled drugs and substances act: lists illegal/prohibited or illicit drugs in the criminal. Code very harsh penalties (some southeast asian countries = death penalty) the prohibition forces illegal market underground (drugs become pricey when prohibited) A consensual criminal activity (for both drug users and the dealer) Police: can"t be reactive, so they need to be proactive through electronic surveillances, videos, intrusive techniques (ex; undercover agent) Cost to laws that prohibit drugs: criminalizes a lt of people, puts a lot of people in prison, costly with enforcing it and holding them in prisons, cost to our civil liberties. Higher level drug trafficking: exception to the rule that crime does not pay bc this one does. Most don"t get caught, only small proportion of them, they operate for a long time before they get caught.
