Upheld in charter of the united nations: un charter = international law, article 2. 1: un based on the principle of the sovereign equality of all its members . Basis of state"s legal identity in international law: you gain membership apart of the un. States can exercise exclusive and total jurisdiction within its territorial borders (p. 12) If you can"t do that then you"re not a sovereign state on your own and you cannot get a membership at the un. States have duty to respect each other"s sovereignty.
