KIN352 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Geriatrics, Ageism, Population Ageing
Document Summary
This week: constructing the old age, objective vs. subjective aging, attitudes towards aging and the aged, ageism and its implications. Which one is older: they are all the same age = 58. What do we think about aging and why? (exam): attitudes = more personal and individual. Referred to: stereotypes = attitudes to a category of people within a society. Important because it could have negativity attached to it. I hate people in red hats but since they are respected in society i respect them. Interacting aging processes (exam): chronological aging = how old we are. It is established in a socially constructed age. How do we define a year, 365 days in a year. This changes in many different cultures (ie. jewish, lunar, chinese). It is really embedded in the culture: functional aging = what functions can still perform. Some people may be 95 and running marathons and others not.
