Document Summary
Centre of mass (com) the center of mass is the mean location of a distribution of mass of the body. Base of support (bos)- area defined by the parts of the body that are in contact with supporting surfaces. Com needs to lie beyond bos to tip over. Stability determined by relationship between center of mass (com) and base of support (bos). Walking is complicated since center of mass has to always be above the base of support for balance. Multiple points of articulation (degrees of freedom) multiple ways in segments the body can move. More degrees of freedom = more joints need to make sure centre of mass above the base of support. Static stability maintain com within fixed bos (spontaneous movements of. Standing still (much easier to maintain balance) eg standing still. Dynamic stability- control of stability when com is externally disturbed and/or when moving bos. Walking / running (harder to maintain balance) eg control stability when walking.
