Individuals employed by local, provincial, or federal governments municipal employees, provincial and federal ministries. Persons employed in health, social services and education employed by other employers but funded by government. Examples are teachers, nurses, college and university employees. Crown corporations such as the cbc, via rail, the bank of canada. Public sector employees represent approximately 25% of the total canadian workforce. Of that 25%, more than half of all union members in canada are public service employees. Union density in the public sector is high at approximately 74% ( 2. 7 million) compared to the private sector at approximately 17% (1. 9 million). Refer to the chart on page 276 of the text for a breakdown of the number of employees in various areas of the public sector. Previously known as the public sector staff relations act. Provided federal employees the right to unionize in 1967. Allowed union to choose between strike or interest arbitration before each negotiation.
