Alcohol Warning Labels
• Results of a multi-year evaluation of US labels indicate an increase in awareness and recall of
label messages, highest levels of awareness and recall among heaviest drinkers, pregnant
women, and young adults suggesting the labels are a well targeted intervention.
• Impact on actual drinking behaviours was little to none, but some studies suggested labels
helped to initiate conversations about alcohol use and health, and may have influenced light
drinkers to cut back on alcohol.
U.S Government Warning
• The alcoholic beverage labeling act of 1988 requires that the following health warning
statement appear on the labels of all containers of alcohol beverages offered for sale or
distribution in the United States
• U.S. Government Warning:
o 1. According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages
during pregnancy because of the risk of birth deficits
o 2. Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate
machinery, and may cause health problems

Alcohol Warning Label – Study #1
Objectives:
1) Test the efficacy of alcohol labels with standard drink information and the Low-Risk Drinking
Guidelines (LRDG) as compared to % alcohol content on ability to estimate alcohol intake
o Strong support (66.2%) for labels with SD information and LRDG
2) Examine label size and format
6 labelling conditions:
1) Control condition - % alcohol content only
2) Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines as pictogram
3) Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines as table
4) SD Information only
5) SD Information + LRDG as pictogram
6) SD Information + LRDG as table
