Automation characterizes the circumstances when a machine assumes a task that is otherwise performed by the human operator. What are the 4 main reasons to automate: carry-out impossible or hazardous tasks ex. Robotic handling of hazardous material; serving needs of special populations who can not perform certain tasks (disabilities) ex. Automatic guidance systems for the quadriplegic or automatic readers for the visually impaired: carry-out difficult or unpleasant tasks ex. Calculators (math can easily be done in your head, but its more effortful and has more potential for error: extend human capability some technology aids instead of replaces (ex. How pilots say auto-pilot mode is helpful when other tasks are weighing on them and they cannot do everything at one: technically possible some functions are automated simply because the technology is there (ex.
