Key idea: want to understand the user, task, environment before you start designing a technology. Also useful to help understand where things may have gone wrong ater a design is in place. Strive to capture as broad a descripion of your users as possible: age, gender, educaion level, physical size, physical abiliies, familiarity with a product, other task-relevant skills. Be careful to avoid sampling bias: if you only sample users who use exising products you may exclude potenial users. A stakeholder is deined as someone who will use or beneit from the use of a system. A primary stakeholder is someone who uses a system directly. A secondary stakeholder is someone who only casually uses a system or who regularly work with people who do. A teriary stakeholder is someone who does not directly use a system, but beneits from its use in some way and / or may inluence the decision to use it.
