In previous lectures, we examined the biology of two of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in history. In this lecture, we will study the biology of the major cause of mortality, if not morbidity, in the word today: the collection of disorders termed the cardiovascular diseases. We"ll see that these disorders share a number of underlying characteristics and that they are truly disorders related to aging (recall that we had to qualify that phrase somewhat when we discussed cancer).
