HIST105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Punk Subculture, Garage Rock, Iggy Pop
Document Summary
Punk wasn"t only a type of music but a world view. A rebellion against the trends of the 70"s. Punks and nihilism (the idea that the world is going to hell and nothing can save us) Punk subculture in the 1970"s and 80"s. Punk record labels (dischord, sst, alternative tentacles, touch and go, etc. ) A way of taking out that primal anger. Garage rock- started off in suburban garages. Garage music was rough around the edge. Most bands if they had hits were one hit wonders. The doors, mc5, iggy pop, the stooges, the new york dolls, the velvet underground. British protopunks: the troggs, the who, the kinks, roxy music, glam bands. All adopted the last name ramone even though it wasn"t actually their last names. Cited as one of the best punk rock bands. Established a reputation as a band that had a really hardcore, hard driving crowd.
