Document Summary

Type of music that blends gospel and r&b. emerged in the late 1950s and early 1960s in the american south. Funk was introduced in the late 1960s, mixing soul with more upbeat beats and heavier percussion: peaked in the years directly after the civil rights movement reached its peak. Took african american music that was deeply rooted in christianity and took it in a more secular movement to appeal to a broader african american (and eventually white) audience. Soul: blended christian religious songs with r&b-> was overpoweringly emotional, and was a communal form in music. Gospel music began to move away from more somber sounds in the 1930s/40s and moved toward swing and jive-> the pilgrim travellers for example (changed and adapted their music to the time of boogie/swing/jive) Ray charles (1930-2004): grew up in georgia. He was partially blind by 5, and was completely blind by 7.
