Heroes main goal is to search for immortality. In odysseus, odysseus has to go to the underworld and visit the blind prophet tiresias there. Odysseus goes up north (has to cross the other side of the ocean) Interesting idea of where you can enter the land of the dead. Idea of crossing something to get to the underworld. Probably got the idea that north doesn"t get sun (always in darkness) Odysseus meets many interesting people in land of dead. Odysseus made animal sacrifices and put their blood in trenches. Ghosts would approach blood longing for it. When they absorb blood they would gain their minds back. Only ghost who kept his wisdom/mind after his dead. Note: he is the purpose for the descent, but is not the focus. Homer uses this descent to the underworld as a literary description of what it means to live rather than die.
