Theseus & myths of athens: early kings of athens. Autochthony associated with the ground, means from the ground itself ancestors were sprung from the ground of athens -> making them native they were from that land: cecrops: culture hero who was autochthon (cf. Erichthonius born from hephaestus and athena hephaestus ejaculated on. Athena"s leg and she wiped it with a cloth and threw it on the ground and out sprung. Came up with panathenaia big festival in athens. Made the sacred statue of athena in wood: erechtheus: war with eleusis, sacrifice of daughters, eumolpus. Erechtheus grandson of erichthonius known for leading the first war against eleusis. Athenians felt that eleusis was a separate part of athens. Eumolpus (one of the eleunisians and son of poseidon) looked like they were going to win the war and so it was prophesized that erechtheus will win the war if he sacrificed his daughters.
