Intro: birth- from zeus" head (military prowess, wisdom, masculine virginity) Recall, athena came out of zeus" head fully armoured. Hesiod"s version: zeus swallowed his consort meis afraid that she would bear a son that would overthrow him. Associated with wisdom - wise and efecive strategy. Portrayed as masculine would favour males over females probably because she was born with no mother. Thinks more like zeus than any other god. One of the 3 virgin goddess -> her virginity may hint that she"s not subject to male power: atributes- aegis and panoply. Portrayal of her aegis (a goat skin bib that hangs down the front for protecion)
