Reporter genes are used because they can produce some kind of product that can be measured when the genes are expressed. When placed under control of a promoter the strength f the promoter can be measured by measuring the level of product production (gfp, beta-galactosidase, luciferase are examples: explain briefly 5" deletion series. This involves deleting of regions of the dna starting from the 5" end.
