Purpose: internal gas transport sys. w/ gas filled lacunae, stores gases, flood tolerant have more. Lateral stems (side ways), forms in o2 rich water and less biomass; auxin gives roots access to oxygen and nitrate, because it"s so close to the surface. Modified erect roots, take in 3-22% more o2 and release co2. Look like the head massager thing: covered in lenticils allow o2 diffusion 2. Hypertrophy: swelling at stem base response to flooding cell expansion ( by cell sep & rupture) . Stem buoyancy: slime take up o2 and co2. Oxygen: will be higher pressure above surface will travel to roots. Co2: will be higher concentration in roots will travel to stem. Back up older lvs out: younger lvs have smaller stomata so greater pressure.
