BIOL373 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Breathing, Rib Cage, Thoracic Wall
Document Summary
Distance limits diffusion rates, all respiratory organs possess large surface area compressed into a small space. Internalized lungs face challenge how to move air between atmosphere and exchange surface deep within body. Air flow requires a muscular pump to create pressure gradients. Resp. system = significant water/heat loss from body. Air = less viscous, compressible compared to blood. Cellular respiration = refers to intracellular reaction of oxygen with organic molecules to produce co2, water and energy in atp. External respiration = movement of gasses between environment and the body"s cells. Four steps: exchange of air between atmosphere and lungs. Inspiration = inhaling, expiration = exhale: exchange of o2 and co2 between lungs and blood, transport of o2 and co2 by blood, exchange of gases between blood and cells. Respiratory system consists of structures involved in ventilation and gas exchange: Conducting systems of passages, or airways that lead from external environment to exchange surface of lungs.
