Document Summary

Terms associated with the skeletal system: cartilage, contact surfaces between bones, synovium, highly vascular membrane inside joints, produces synovial fluid, ligaments, attach bone to bone and stabilize joints, tendons, attach muscles to bones. Joints: role: smooth functioning of skeletal system, trauma, shock absorption. Cartilage: located on the articular surfaces of all bones of all movable joints, non-vascular connective tissue embedded in a cartilage matrix called chondrin (heals slowly). Strength: elastic - eg. external ear, lots of elastin fibers -flexible. Articular or hyaline cartilage: cause of majority of age-related problems in joints, found at ends of bone in joint cavities. Surrounded by synovial membrane: specialized secretory epithelium, makes synovial fluid, synovial fluid pumped into cavity, yellow, viscous fluid, water, proteins, lubricates, friction, absorbs shock, nourishes cartilage, surrounded by fibrous joint capsule and ligament. Age-related changes in joints: synovial membrane: very vascularized. Normal aged vertebrae: center of vertebral body weakens (soft and hard bone)
