Basic emotions: earliest form of social communication (fear, sadness, happiness: over first ear of life, refinement of states from general approach vs withdrawal to discrete emotions. Happiness: promotes bonding, 6-10 weeks social smile, hold them close to your face, they will recognize u and smile, 3-4 months laughter, becomes possible for them to laugh. Increases after 6 months in frequency and intensity: stranger wariness, adaptive function. Self recognition: explicit self awareness (15+ months, must have an understanding of yourself. Others emotions: social referencing (8-10 months, uses others emotions to evaluate ambiguous situation. Psych lecture: emotional self regulation, adjusting emotional state to meet goals, getting upset on purpose to achieve a goal, later understand that crying is something that will get your mothers response.
