Function: look at the top layer of an epithelium to determine its function: (protection, Apical: free surface, faces lumen or outside environment, may contain modi cations to perform function. Apical modi cations: along the apical side of an epithelium, modi cations may be present in order to perform the tissues function. Mocrovilli: short cylindrical projections that increase surface area for absorption, normally shorter than half the size of the nucleus (longer have more absorption) found in the digestive tract and kidney. Brush boarder: can not see individual microvilli, striated boarder has a brush like appearance. Acitin: actin core protrudes up into each microvilli, surrounded by lipid membrane, no active movement of microvilli. Stereocilia: modi ed microvilli that are very long, sparsely distributed and ragged looking, found in inner ear and epididymis. Cilia: long motile projections (half the nucleus size or longer), sweeping motion moves substances across apical surface of tissue.
