Electrical signals changes in cells membrane potential. Chemical signals molecules secreted by cells into ecf. Contact dependent signals require cell to cell contact. Paracrine and autocrine signals carry out local communication. Long distance communication may be electrical of chemical. Cytokines may act as both local and long distance signals. All nucleated cells secrete cytokines in response to a stimuli. Controls: cell development function as paracrine or autocrine, cell differentiation function as paracrine or autocrine. Immune response: stress and inflammation maybe transported as hormones and affect distant targets. Ex. erythropoietin controls synthesis of red blood cells. Functionally fits the definition of a cytokine. Receptor proteins are located inside the cell or on the cell membrane. Target receptors found in nucleus, cytosol, or on the cell membrane as integral proteins: where chemical signal binds depends on if the signal molecule can get into the cell.
