BIOL130L Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Due Date, Statistical Hypothesis Testing, Reducing Sugar
Document Summary
Testing samples of solutions containing different macromolecules using treatment controls. Date of the experiment: thursday, september 24th, 2015. The 11 known samples contained different types of macromolecules from the four main types of biological macromolecules; carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. All these types of macromolecules are mainly composed of organic carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen and in some cases, small portions of sulfur, and phosphorus (de faria, 1998). Carbohydrates can be categorized as monosaccharides and polysaccharides which includes all the simple sugars used by our bodies, and different types of starches produced by plants. In this laboratory experiment, two tests were performed to identify two main divisions of carbohydrates; iodine test, and the. They were performed to test for glycogen and starch, and reducing sugars, respectively. Reducing sugars include any of the sugars that has an aldehyde group at a terminal carbon, or a ketone group in a middle carbon which can be later oxidized into carboxylic acids.
