AVIA101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Ambient Pressure, Pitot-Static System, Centrifugal Force
Document Summary
Gyroscopic: attitude indicator, turn coordinator, heading indicator. Pitot-static: asi, altimeter, vsi, a pitot-static system is used by asi, the other two use only static system, pitot tube and static port. Pitot is l-shaped tube on leading edge of left wing. Has a drain that lets out water, and has a pitot heat that removes ice: static pressure. Ambient pressure of the atmosphere (measured by static port) Located on the side of the cowling near the propeller. On angle with relative airflow (does not measure ram air), this is so speed does not influence the measurement: total pressure. Pressure created inside the pitot tube as the plane moves forward. Includes both static pressure + pressure due to motion: the pressure from motion is measured using the pitot tube, air hitting the pitot tube and entering is known as ram air, dynamic pressure. Difference b/w the above, it is a direct indication of the forward speed of the aircraft.
