Document Summary

Chapter 5: the neolithic revolution: the domestication of plants and animals. Between the paleolithic and neolithic, a time of warming after the last glacial period included rising sea levels, changes in vegetation, and the disappearance of herd animals from many areas. A shift from the hunting of big game to hunting of smaller game and gathering a broad spectrum of plants and aquatic resources characterized by the mesolithic. Increased reliance on seafood and plants allowed some people to become more sedentary. Tool kits included microliths small, hard, sharp blades of flint or similar stone that could be mass-produced and hafted as well as hafting of larger blades to produce implements like sickles. Archaic cultures of the americas are comparable to the old world mesolithic. A shift to food production through the domestication of plants and animals constitutes most of the change of this period.
